Q: Diagnose Non-functioning and Reprogram Keyless Entry 1996 Chevy Suburban?
We have two issues going on with our keyless entry. First, the keyless entry stopped working, but after changing the batteries and finding the range distance reduce over a number of months. The keyless entry never worked that well when we bought it used but at least it worked. Eventually both fobs stopped working after it appears the range got shorter. The fobs would only work inside the vehicle. It wasn't the remotes, or the batteries, but something else. I thought perhaps it might be the receiver, but I don't know where that is located. Once that is figured out, we will have to reprogram them. How would I go about doing this? I see directions for other Suburban years, but I am not certain they would apply to a 1996. We have 3 buttons on our fobs. Thanks much!

A: I own a shop, and what I think is this; If the fob works inside the vehicle, and the range keeps reducing, then this is certainly a problem. The "only" thing that dictates the range of the fob, is the fob. Try this; with an old battery powered radio, put it on the FM band somewhere around the center to right portion of the dial. Push the buttons on the fob, and you should hear the radio make a noise. I use an old transistor type radio that I bought at a flea market. Adjust the radio to where its not on any station, and the fob is loudest. Now, you have a receiver to tell you the range of the fob. The radio works best if the fob is pointed at it. Back away from the radio while testing the fob by momentarily pushing each button on it. This will tell you the range of the fob, so keep backing away until a buddy can no longer hear the noise in the radio. This is a cheap inexpensive way to test your fob. You can also test your TV, or any other remote with the radio. Since the fob transmits using the FM band, you may have to move the dial around to locate the best place to put the dial for optimal reception. I can tell you from experience, that the problem sounds like a dead battery in the fob/fobs. The answer above has nailed the procedure for programming the fob, but they either work or don't work, and since the receiver does work, this test will confirm which is bad, or has reduced power. Range is determined by the output of the transmitter most of the time. The only way I see the receiver being the problem is if it has reduced power, or something restricting its ability to see the signal. When you program the fob, you are setting the frequency in which the receiver operates, not the fob itself. This is why its important to keep power to the vehicles system when changing the battery. I have a tool that plugs into the vehicles cigarette lighter, that uses a 9 volt battery, and it keeps the vehicle from loosing its program and presets. If after you determine the fob is working correctly, and you have tried the above method of programming the receiver, you still have a problem, then I would have to say you will have to replace the receiver. The problem may even be in the antenna of the receiver not making a good connection, or is corroded. I can say this; changing the batteries in a fob is a difficult task, and the batteries can be shorted out all to easily. Just because a battery is new, does not mean its any good. A battery may test good for voltage, but still be bad because the only true way is to load test a battery, and it takes a special tester for these tiny batteries. I would try to replace the batteries with some known good batteries, and I think you just might find the problem. Like I stated before, the receiver (usually) either works or doesn't work, and its up to the transmitter to send a strong enough signal. 90% of the time the transmitter is low on power, and this is what dictates the range of operation. I hope this helps you resolve your issue. Glad to add my 2 cents worth. Good Luck!!!

Q: Why am I not getting heat in my 1996 Chevy Suburban?
Normally I hear that the floor will get wet when the heater core goes out. Well I don't feel any water any where. Where is the core located and how do I know if it is working or not? Is it in the enclosed casing in the rear? This is a bad time to not have any heat in the ride. And bad enough. It's the wives transportation. Cone on guys. Help me out. When the climate control is turned to heat, nothing but cool air or just air. Not air like the A/C is running. More like fan mode. I tried running it and went to the back to see if the thing in the enclosed compartment was running. Nothing.

A: Clogged heater core or low coolant level. Either way go get you coolant system flushed.

Q: whats wrong with my chevy suburban?
The truck in question is a 1996 chevy suburban. It is having trouble starting. I have had fuel pump done twice in a month and a half. This does not seem to have fixed the issue.Whats the root problem and how do I fix it?? The filter has been changed three times. All the previous work has been done by professionals pharm_doc clogged fuel injector nozzle sounds most likely. how do i flush/unclog?

A: over the years i have ran into this problem many times and just about every time it the spider injector system failing vortec engines are notorious for this and usually when they start going bad they take out the fuel pump first good luck

Q: Chevy Suburban help needed?
Turn and flashing signal lights don't work on my 1996 Chevy Suburban 4 x 4, where is the fuse box located? or, how can this be fixed?

A: Flasher unit is located under dash, left of the brake pedal. Small black square on bottom of relay panel, pull. It will have 4 pins, can be replaced at Checker/Autozone/Napa for about $10-13. Fuse panel located on driver's side of dash, open driver door, then you can access the panel.

Q: How to remove a damaged key ignition?
I have my steering wheel off and everything tore down but I am stuck at getting the key switch out. The lock pin is loose but it is not backing out to release the key switch so I can replace it. Any Ideas. Seems like something has it jammed. Probem started when I put the key in and it would not turn at all. Key slides in and out too easy. (can't feel tumblers). 1996 Chevy Suburban. I think w/ a 1995 steering wheel and column though.

A: . You'll need a steering wheel puller and lock ring depressor tool. Remove steering wheel, lock ring, turn signal switch assembly (it can just hang from the column by its harness), the little clip-in switch for the "key in ignition" warning buzzer, then there's one torx bolt to remove the cylinder itself. the hazard button has to be unscrewed, too. Here are some steering column sites with photos that tell how to repair loose tilt columns. The photos should be helpful. The first few steps will be the same as for changing the key cylinder. http://www.fieros.de/en/articles/steering.html http://elcaminocentral.com/article95.html Looks like on this site he did the quick fix and did not take it apart far enough to tighten all four fasteners. http://www.chevyasylum.com/column/tiltcol.html Exploded View of a tilt column. http://www.nastyz28.com/tech/e-tiltcol.html

Q: Is a hole in the muffler bad?
I have a 1996 Chevy Suburban that has a small hole in the rear of the muffler. It causes some annoying sounds and just sounds like something is clunking around. Is it dangerous or bad for the car if I don't get it fixed?

A: Hole in the muffler is not bad just makes the ride loud and annoying but your not polluting the air any more if it didn't have a hole in it. As long as the exhaust flow is ok going through the catalytic converter then it does not matter after that.
