Q: When a 1996 Chevy Tahoe is stolen without a key, does the fuel pump shut itself down?
Our 96 Tahoe was stolen last night. We still have both sets of keys. My step sons tells us that without a key in the ignition, the fuel pump automatically shuts itself down. Is this true for theis year, make, and model?
I knew we needed a smaller, more fuel efficient car, but didn't want to go about it this way! LOL!
A: They might just have a key to your car. All it takes to get one is the VIN and a dealer employee friend to cut it. To get around the security is easy too, you find out the passkey resistance from the VIN and bypass the switch with the right resistor(the same ones the installer would use to put a remote start on your car), and then slide hammer the key cylinder or cut and push the ignition switch rod in the column. The dealer you bought that vehicle from, if you did from a dealer, still has a set of keys to it as well. You just never know in today's world. GM's are easy to steal the security is kind of a joke. Someone leaves a car at my shop and takes the keys with them. If I can't get ahold of the owner to get keys, I call the dealer and get a set DELIVERED. Think how easy that is.

What type of e-brake does a 1996 tahoe have, its a 2 door, 2 wheel drive. I think it may need serviced, how can I do a check if it needs servicing? anything to save a few bucks!
A: If you can push the park brake more than 3/4 way to the floor it needs adjusted.If you go to your local chevy dealer this will cost about a half hour labor.They will adjust the rear brakes and park brake cable.This will be money well spent.Best of luck with your tahoe.
Q: I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe, and I am going to replace the stereo. How do I get passed or disable the security?
I know that my stereo comes with the factory security feature, and I want to know that when I put in my new deck, I won't have any trouble getting it to work right. I don't know what to do to bypass it myself because I want to do the install myself. Any advice?
A: the security is within the factory stereo. Once it is removed, you will not have a problem with the aftermarket stereo.
There are a few things you might want to know about this vehicle...
If you have 4x10 speakers in the celing in the back, when you install an aftermarket radio, the rear door speakers will not work. You will have to rewire them to the radio. I never tracked down why they don't work, it was faster to run new wires.

I think i could only get about $3000 (KBB) and it needs work but it will save me in the long run when he is ready to drive. I dont want him to drive my Honda Accord.

This is an easy question with a big answer.
The odometer in that vehicle is electronically driven. There is a little step motor that drives two gears which drive the odometer and trip odometer. The step motor can go bad. The gears can go bad. The main odometer or trip odometer can get bound up and go bad.
This Odometer and trip odometer with step motor is usually replaced as one unit. If i repaired the unit; I would charge you $150.00 for repair and $50.00 for labor. The parts i would use would be brand new.I would also set the correct mileage and give two year warranty.
You could also go down to junkyard. Prices range here from $50.00 at pick n pull to $100.00. The mileage would need to be reset. The unit may be bad since it is used. The warranty is usually 30 days.

Q: Would a Corvette Engine fit on a 1996 Chevy Tahoe and how much would it cost to get this done?
A: I personaly wouldn't sugest puting a vette engine in to a tahoe. vette engines dont produce as much torq and cost hella lot. Have your Vortec Rebuilt with a new cam a nice pair of headers and have some head work done. will produce a lil more than a vette and be less expensive.

A: I would put a 350 back in it. Anything else and you may have to put in a new wiring harness and computer.

I'm posting this again with some more details...I have a 1996 chevy tahoe 5.7liter v8 with 100,000 miles. And I am having a problem with it starting. Just got the full tune up...wires, plugs, rotor, cap, oil change, etc. and still just won't Start (will start sometimes) Garage also tested the fuel pump pressure and it was good. The only way to start it when it won't start is to shoot some starting fluid down the throttle body...then it fires right up. I should state that, when I mean it won't start is that the engine turns over, but won't fire up? Is that the right description? It just keeps cranking over and over! Any advise would be great...Thanks!

What was the fuel pressure reading? These Vortec engines need 55-65 psi in order to run efficiently.

So i have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe and I'm 17 years old. My parenets decided that they wanted to be dicks today and make it so that it doesn't start because they think that I'm going to be driving drunk?? So my parents arent home and won't be home for like 3 hours and I called my dad and asked him if he did anything to it and he said I'm not going to be able to start it and I said why and he said cuz I'm probably going to go out drinking later and drive? So if anyone knows what he did to it or could have done, can you please tell me what I could do to start it. And by the way, I know its not the batter because all the lights work and the belt moves when i put the key in and try to start it. It justs sounds like its dead but I know its not. THANKS!!!!

A: If you dont plan on any serious off-roading srew them to the underside of the front bumper so they are closer to the road and will illuminat better. If you do plan to off-road a bit screw them to the top of the bumper and aim them slightly down since they tend to blind on-comming trafic.

A: Probably your fuel pump. It will provide enough fuel to idle the vehicle, but once you accelerate, the pump can't keep up. The fuel pump goes out easily on those vehicle, so I think it's a pretty good guess. Chevy fuel pumps are loud, so when you turn the key on(not start), listen to see if the pump whines, or if it sounds weak. That is just my educated guess. To cover other things, it could be the fuel regulator letting too much fuel go through the system. If you have a pressure gauge with a fuel rail fitting, hook it up, turn the key on, and there should be around 18psi pressure. Another thing could be the fuel filter by restricting the flow of fuel. just a few things to look at for starters.

Anyone have dual pipes consisting single chamber flowmasters ,if yes are they LOUD?
A: flowmasters are noisy to start with.; Is or was this done to incrrease HP? If yes you'll have to live with it if you just purchased tahoe see if previous owner has original exhaust and get it the HP increase you get is not worth the lower life of exhaust compared to Hp incrfease
Q: Fuel pump?1996 Chevy Tahoe.Could it be?
We have a 96 chevy tahoe. My husband has to put fuel in the throttle body to get it to start then it will run allday long. But it will not crank on its own it will turn over just not start. Its driving him crazy! He has replaced the filter, fuel meter body, press. reg, all fuel inject. Still no luck .He can hear the fuel pump running when you turn it over . He has tried to bleed air out of line incase there was any. Dont know what to do.
I forgot to say the gas cap has already been changed. Thank you though. If the fuel relay was out would the fuel pump run at all? The truck has just started delaying when you press on the gas. I agree a professional would be good but cant affored it right now. I hope you understand. Thank you.
A: sounds like he is a bad guesser, take it to someone qualified to diagnosis the problem. may have low fuel pressure or a bad check valve in the fuel pump so fuel pressure bleeds down
