Q: how to replace the starter on 1999 Chevy Tracker?
it is making a loud noise when trying to start it, almost a whining sound, could this be the solenoid rather than the starter ?

A: No. Replace starter. Remove wires. Unbolt. Put on in reverse order.

Q: How much should new brakes cost for a 1999 Chevy Tracker?

Q: using a 1999 chevy tracker 4WD to haul/pull?
i am going to be moving and plan on using the u-haul company. i drive a 1999 chevy tracker 4WD and was wondering it would pull a cargo trailer? and if so, what would be the approximate maximum lbs it would pull? thanks in advance!

A: checking the owners manual is the best thing to do (as answered by someone else).. your truck is not listed in any towing info list because its not rated to tow more than 2000 lbs.. i'de bet it isn't more than 1500 at best.. its not about what you can pull , its about the stopping power.. your little tracker is not capable of stopping a heavy trailer. "u- haul" may not even rent a trailer to you over 1000 lbs total cap.. they have strict guidlines on what they hook a trailer to. you should let them know what you're doing before you do it.. a couple of small bikes, a jet ski, small boat or tent trailer at best.. dont be surprised if they turn you awy at u-haul , penske and ryder.. good luck with the move.. rent a box truck..

Q: I just bought a chevy tracker, 1999 and the brake system leaks.?
The car is 30 minutes from my house and i want to drive it home. I heard the 1999 tracker comes with a dual braking system. Does that mean the other system is not affected by the one that is bad? Can i use the emrgency break as a back up to get home? I am nervous about the brakes giving out on me. Should I try that or stay away from doing it and tow the car instead? Thanks!

A: Tow it home. The "dual" braking system refers to the vehicle having an isolated system for the front and the rear. It is never a good idea to try and drive a vehicle that you know has bad brakes.

Q: does a 1999 Chevy tracker have a vacuum or electric 4x4 system?
My bro in laws front wheels will not engage. The 4x4 indicater light comes on but the wheels are not engaging.Everything, axels, driveshaft, all look good, but what is the type of acuator up under front bumper?

A: It's electric and you probably have a problem either with the actuator pump or the axle actuator control. The easiest thing to do is test for power and ground at the actuator pump. A Wiring diagram would help, but I couldn't imagine their being more than 2-3 wires. The pump may be getting the signal (ground or Power) and possibly faulty which would require replacement. Chances are if the 4wd light isn't flashing, the control unit doesn't see a fault and it's most likely the pump. I hope this helps.

Q: My 1999 Chevy Tracker seems to have a water leak somewhere. Help!!?
I replaced my soft top with a hard top but, the leak is not there because my seats are not getting wet, just the floor. I don't have a leak around the windshield seal and am running out of ideas as to what it could be. If you have an answer or have experienced this same problem let me know how to fix it.

A: Is there any chance the leak is antifreeze/coolant coming from the heater core ? Just in case you don't know, the heater core looks like a tiny radiator under your dash. Hot coolant flows through the heater core, from the engine, and the heater fan blows air through the heater core into the cabin of the vehicle to provide heat. It's common for them to start leaking. It will be covered with plastic panels and ductwork but you can look at the floorboard where it goes up under the dash and see if it's wet. Antifreeze will feel sticky/oily. If it is the heater core some can be replaced in 10 minutes while others can take hours to get to. If it's not the core, how are your door seals ? There should be a foam strip completely around each door. If pieces are missing, water will pour in. Also, there are metal plugs in the floorboard under the carpet of most GM vehicles. You should check to make sure they are all intact. If you don't want to pull the carpet you can try looking from underneath. Hope this helps, Scot.

Q: 1999 chevy tracker, 4 cyl. 4 wheel drive with evap code showing?
EVAP code came up at inspection and car didn't pass. what is that and where do we look for problems? car runs fine and did have faulty o2 sensor but that was fixed.

A: Evap codes are for the most part around the gas tank. You may have a leak in the cap of the gas tank if it was loose it will throw the code.It shows up most often after fill up. You need to take it to a dealer and let them tell you or tell us the code and I can find out for you what it is.

Q: How do I install a new head unit (cd reciever) in my 1999 chevy tracker?
I have a 2 door chevy tracker, and I was interested in someone that can guide me on removing the factory stereo and putting a new one in. Does it matter what size the reciever is.

A: size dont matter, at least as far as a cd player goes, sorry. youll need either one that fits, which wherever you buy head unit, should tell the size. theres a size for chrysler/gm vehicles. only so many cd players that I know of made for these vehicles, pioneer makes them, and jensen, i believe. otherwise, get a regular single din size, and an aftermarket mount. a wiring harness makes the job of wiring much simpler, and theyre relatively inexpensive, for the mount and wires and antenna adapter, youre talking thirty- fourty bucks. as far as taking the old stereo out, it shouldnt be much more than a few screws underneath the dash, and a few clips in sporadic places, if thats the case at all. sometimes, thers a trim ring around the head unit which pops right out, allowing access (much easier, btw) to the screws holding the gm head unit in place. DO NOT PRY THE CLIPS. use a screwdriver, or something of the sort as leverage for getting these clips out. trust me, you dont want them to break. youll also need an antenna adapter for the aftermarket cd player, as gm antennas do not fit directly. connect all the wires, color to color, and secure with butt connectors, or electrical tape. ive used electrical tape in every stereo setup ive evr done, no probs yet. after all is connected, pop the console back on, do not push clips in or screws in just yet, turn on the car, and make sure your cd player is operating. after that put the console back, set all presets, and hit the road. you can email me if you have more questions. copy the link below for crutchfield.com with stuff for that vehicle
